With the UK’s retail industry currently experiencing challenging times, small businesses operating in the sector have been advised to ensure that their staff engagement policies are not contributing to their downfall.
Ben Sillitoe, editor of Retail Gazette, has claimed that having a fully engaged workforce can boost a firm’s productivity and added that this does not have to manifest itself in higher salaries or cash incentives.
“Embattled retailers need to make sure that the way they treat and reward staff is not contributing to their struggles in the first place,” he said.
“I would say that employee engagement – which isn’t just achieved through higher salaries, bonuses and perks; it is also about generating the right working environment, providing inspiring offices and stores to work in and keeping staff informed about how their company is performing – is absolutely essential for the overall success of a business and its future growth.”
The comments follow the publication of a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, which identified employee engagement as the top human resource challenge businesses will face over the coming years.
