TVSpy, a national website covering broadcast news affiliates, talked to KATV-TV, Channel 7 reporter Matt Johnson for a story posted Tuesday about his rap, “Camera Tricks,” based on his life as a TV reporter.

he recorded the track, embedded below, after “becoming disillusioned from all the robbery, shooting, and other crime stories” he was covering.

Johnson, a southern California native who says he’s been rapping since high school, told the site that his hobby has made him a better reporter, helping him craft a confident broadcast voice and teaching him how to emphasize words.

“Also, performing at random LA venues in college helped me overcome nerves when I first started to report live,” he said. “On top of all that, I think I’ve become a decent ad-libber because of my days freestyling in high school where I’d have to come up with rhymes on the fly.”

Johnson joined KATV, the Allbritton Communications-owned ABC affiliate, after working for KXXV-TV, an ABC affiliate in Waco, Texas.
