ROHWER — The former Japanese internment camp at Rohwer in southeast Arkansas is to share about $400,000 in grant money with two other Arkansas projects devoted to the World War II-era detentions.

The federal grant from the Interior Department was announced Friday and includes $250,000 for restoration of a cemetery at the camp where Japanese Americans were kept during the war in the Pacific.

The Central Arkansas Library System is getting $68,000 to preserve and display artwork by people held at the camp. Arkansas State University is getting $93,000 to develop kiosks and panels and other signs that will help visitors interpret the camp. The university is also to develop an audio tour.

In all, $2.9 million was awarded in grants for internment sites in 12 states, including Arkansas.
