There has been a big jump in the global output of heat-trapping carbon dioxide.
The US Department of Energy has calculated that levels of greenhouse gases are higher than bad case scenarios outlined by climate-change scientists only four years ago.
Figures show the world pushed out about 564 million more tonnes of carbon into the air in 2010 than it did in 2009; an increase of 6 percent.
The energy department said the added pollution surpasses that which is emitted by all countries taken together, apart from China, the United States and India.
Extra pollution in China and the US made up more than half the increase in emissions last year.
