Social media can be daunting, especially for small business owners strapped for time and manpower. However, leveraging your presence on Facebook can be a simple, effective way to generate buzz for your business without draining your marketing budget.

“They understand the way people communicate has changed dramatically,” Anteau said.

It seems like products and services come and go from the marketplace theses days. It’s hard to keep up with technology and easy to get left behind if you’re not paying attention. It’s nice to see a longtime friend, Dunkin’ Donuts, still around – and growing at that.

No, donuts have not yet gone out of style.

However, while reading about the recent Dunkin’ Donuts IPO announcement, I found it interesting that the majority of their profits come from coffee drinks. Most likely, the company did not start out this way, and they have successfully changed to meet the market’s needs.

Whole Foods Inc. plans to open a 20,000-square-foot market in Detroit’s Midtown area, the national natural and organic food grocer’s first store in the city, the company said Wednesday.

The Whole Foods store is a rare victory in a city starved for retail outlets. The plan is to open the store in 2013 and create 60-75 jobs, Whole Foods said. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art on Thursday announced that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. was giving the Bentonville museum a $20 million grant to cover admission fees for all visitors.

The grant is intended to make admission to the museum free in perpetuity. A $10 admission fee for adults had been under consideration before the grant announcement, the museum said.

Museum officials and guests including Gov. Mike Beebe were on hand for the announcement, which took place in front of the recently completed main entrance to the museum, giving the public its first opportunity to view it.

Near the entrance is the 47-foot-tall, stainless steel tree-like sculpture called “Yield,” by Roxy Paine.

When McDonald’s announced Tuesday that it would make the standard child’s Happy Meal more healthful, company officials said they were responding to the desires of their customers. But the move also makes business sense, analysts say.

“This is good publicity, and if you sell more Happy Meals, you’re likely selling more Big Macs to the parents,” says Peter Saleh, a restaurant analyst with Telsey Advisory Group in New York.

Sam Oches, an associate editor with QSR Magazine, a fast-food industry trade journal, says McDonald’s won’t say how many Happy Meals they sell, but they’re rumored to account for about 10 percent of sales.

“They do more than $32 billion in sales every year, so Happy Meals are potentially a $3 billion chunk of that,” Oches says.
